ASSOCIATION
OF PUBLIC ANALYSTS - Annual Statistics for the Public Analyst Service
2001
Gathered and analysed by David Dunn, retired member, and
presented at the Association of Public Analysts’
Annual
General Meeting on 12th October 2002 by Paul Lenartowicz, Vice
President
The sampling of food by enforcement authorities to check
that it contained no chemical contaminants, that it had the correct
composition, and that it was
correctly labelled, fell by 12% in
2001 compared to the previous year.
One in five of the food
samples submitted to Public Analysts in 2001 was found to be
unsatisfactory – a proportion that has remained fairly constant
for
several years.
The rate of sampling corresponded to just
two samples per week per 100,000 people – the population of a
moderate size town.
The amount spent on the analysis of food by
enforcement authorities was in the region of one hundredth of one
percent of national expenditure on food.
The present rate of
sampling means that many foodstuffs are sampled very infrequently,
while many may never be sampled at all.
The Public Analyst service
warns that the system is on the verge of collapse.
