Je voudrais revenir sur une information diffusée par l'EWG et par d'autres grands journaux :

Selon cette information, l'Université de Loma Linda à San Bernardino (Californie) effectue pour le compte de l'entreprise Lockheed Martin une étude de grande envergure sur un contaminant toxique de l'eau potable, condamnée par les groupes de pression environnementaux.

Le Los Angeles Times a relevé le 27/11/00 que  cette université rémunère 100 personnes à raison de 1.000 $ pour consommer une dose de perchlorate chaque jour pendant six mois. Le perchlorate est un composant toxique de carburant utilisé dans les fusées et qui endommagela fonction thyroïde, empêchant le développement sain des foetus et des enfants et causant le cancer.

On le trouve dans les circuits d'approvisionnements en eau en Californie, la plupart d'entre elles à Los Angeles et comtés environnants. Bien que les chercheurs de Loma Linda aient défendu leur étude en indiquant que le perchlorate a également la valeur thérapeutique, EWG a appris que son utilisation en médecine a été critiquée depuis 1966, quand les chercheurs israéliens ont enregistré que les grandes doses ont causé les décès et la maladie grave parmi les sujets  à expérience déjà-malades.

Si Lockheed Martin arrive à persuader l'état et l'EPA pour éviter la fixation de normes strictes pour le perchlorate en eau potable, la compagnie épargnera des millions de dollars en coûts de nettoyage. Le générateur de fusée est également poursuivi par un groupe de citoyens du comté de San Bernardino qui souffrent du cancer de la thyroïde et d'autres désordres susceptibles d'êtres causés par la pollution de l'eau d'une usine à présent fermée.
