Le nombre de cas d'ESB augmente en Irlande du Nord
L'Irlande du Nord avait jusqu'a present ete relativement epargnee par l'epidemie de vache folle qui a touche le Royaume-Uni avec seulement 2000 cas depuis le debut de l'epidemie en 1988 (contre 180 000 pour la Grande-Bretagne). La region esperait pouvoir alleger les restrictions a l'exportation qui lui sont imposees. Cependant, l'Irlande du Nord connait une recrudescence de cas d'Encephalopathie Spongiforme Bovine (ESB) depuis 3 ans. Alors qu'en 1999 seuls 6 cas ete observes, ce chiffre est monte a 76 et 69 respectivement en 2000 et 2001 et pour le premiere trimestre 2002, 37 cas ont deja ete repertories. Ces cas sont principalement decouverts chez des betes agees et le veterinaire en chef estime que c'est le resultat d'une faible contamination avec des farines animales.
Cependant, 3 cas ont ete decouverts chez des animaux nes apres le renforcement des controles sur les farines animales (1er aout 1996). L'une des betes pourrait avoir ete contaminee pendant la gestation ou a la naissance. Pour les deux autres cas, il est plus vraisemblable qu'une contamination avec des farines animales a provoque l'infection. -

LE SEAC SE REUNIRA DESORMAIS EN PUBLIC
Dans un esprit d'ouverture et de transparence, le "Spongiforme Encephalopathy Advisory Committee" (SEAC) devrait, a partir de l'automne prochain, tenir ses reunions en public. Seuls les articles scientifiques non encore publies seront examines lors de seances fermees en raison de problemes de confidentialite. Cette evolution pourrait s'accompagner d'un remodelage du site Internet du SEAC afin que les informations discutees
pendant les reunions soient publiees. Le SEAC avait deja fait une tentative d'ouverture au public en Septembre 2001 mais qui n'avait pas ete continuee par la suite. La "Food Standards Agency" a deja adoptee cette politique de transparence en ouvrant au public l'ensemble de ces reunions plenieres. -
