NOUVELLES AUTORISATIONS POUR LA CULTURE DES OGM
Le Ministere japonais de l'Agriculture a approuve la culture de trois nouveaux organismes genetiquement modifies, deux plantes et un microorganisme, apres consultation d'un comite d'experts, comme le recommandent les directives en vigueur. La premiere autorisation concerne la culture en systeme ouvert par Aventis CropScience Japan d'un riz tolerant au glufosinate (LLRICE 62) afin d'evaluer les risques a grande echelle de la culture de cette variete. La deuxieme concerne la culture en serre confinee par Monsanto Japan d'une variete de coton Bt resistant aux insectes (15985). Enfin, la troisieme autorise la production a l'echelle industrielle par Shin Nihon Chemical d'une mannose isomerase par l'intermediaire d'un Bacillus subtilis genetiquement modifie. NOUVELLE ETUDE PAR L'OFFICE FEDERAL DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT SUR LES TECHNOLOGIES GENETIQUES
L'Office Federal de l'Environnement autrichien (UBA, Umweltbundesamt) a rendu publique en janvier 2001 une etude bibliographique relative aux OGM, et demandent une coordination plus appuyee entre les differents organismes de recherche, tant du point de vue de la recherche que des publications.
Selon l'etude, pour les MOGM (microorganismes genetiquement modifies, y compris bacteries), il apparait acquis scientifiquement qu'ils peuvent entrer en concurrence avec leurs homologues naturels en terrain libre. Les genes developpes artificiellement n'ont pas de desavantage intrinseque.
Mais les MOGM peuvent transferer leurs nouveaux genes a d'autres bacteries, avec des effets imprevisibles.
Pour les plantes, les effets observes scientifiquement des modifications genetiques (MG) varient considerablement d'une espece a l'autre. Le soja MG par exemple presente des modifications imprevues initialement (budget hormonal modifie). Le coton MG a cause des problemes inattendus (par exemple une espece rendue resistante a certains insectes s'est vue attaquee par un parasite qui ne causait jusque la aucun dommage, ce qui a necessite l'emploi de pesticides). Les peupliers transgeniques en Allemagne du Nord ont vu les relations de leurs racines avec leurs champignons symbiotiques (mycorhizes) alterees de facon significative.
Quant aux animaux modifies genetiquement, il existe des exemples de croissances tumorales et modifications des vertebres, nageoires, ouies et cranes sur des poissons entre autres.

Le ministre autrichien de l'environnement et de l'agriculture Wilhelm Molterer a reagi prudemment en demandant une strategie progressive, basee sur une recherche relative aux risques et a la securite, et n'envisage que des decisions au cas par cas, compte tenu des tres differents domaines d'application, de la medecine a l'agriculture. La recherche sur les
risques ne doit cependant pas devenir un instrument d'obstruction.

Ce genre de communiqué succinct ne rend probablement pas compte de la situation sur le terrain et des mécanismes en cause...

Par exemple
la"..reduction of the parasitic natural enemies..." , s'il s'agit des ennemis naturels du ver du coton, est compréhensible si les populations de ce dernier sont réduites par l'utilisation du coton-Bt (il faudrait avoir les chiffres relatifs)...etc..

Il ne faut pas confondre ce que l'on observe, la façon dont on l'interprète, et les conclusions que l'on peut en tirer

Il faudrait absolument que l'opinion, y compris les écologistes (éclairés par définition), relativise ce genre de propos.

On sait depuis vingt ans que les lépidoptères nuisibles peuvent acquérir par sélection une résistance au Bt. Le fait de l'insoporer à la plante n'a rien
changé. C'est toujours une course poursuite entre l'homme qui protège ses cultures et ses denrées stockées d'une part, et les insectes ravageurs
d'autre part. Les industriels doivent constamment rectifier le tir, en essayant de réduire les dégâts collatéraux.

Auparavant, la multiplication des traitements insecticides polyvalents sur coton entraînait l'apparition de races résistantes des ravageurs primaires
(cibles), la pullulation de ravageurs secondaires (non-cibles) devenant eux-aussi résistants, la destruction des insectes auxiliaires pouvant
intervenir utilement sur les uns et sur les autres...sans parler de l'impact catastrophique sur la faune (oiseaux, poissons) ...et de la mortalité chez
les utilisateurs. Cela continue en Afrique et dans plusieurs contrées d'Amérique du Sud.

Alors, entre deux maux...
