MATINTERNET 07-05 Pollution des Grands Lacs et du fleuve St-Laurent 
La multiplication des fermes industrielles et l'utilisation de fertilisants sont responsables de la réapparition de la pollution massive dans la portion canadienne des Grands Lacs et, par voie de conséquence, du fleuve Saint-Laurent.
Une étude de cinq ministères fédéraux révèle que la mauvaise utilisation des fertilisants par les méga-fermes est responsable de la hausse du taux de nitrate et de phosphore. Ces produits sont à l'origine de la prolifération des algues, qui asphyxient les poissons. Le mauvais état des égouts municipaux joue un rôle qui va en s'accroissant. Les chercheurs avertissent que certaines des algues ont des effets sur le système nerveux des poissons et des humains.
