s'il est connu que les animaux victimes sont d'abord les grands singes puis l'homme, la découverte que le réservoir de ce pathogène et d'autres d'ailleurs de même nature, est un groupe d'animaux frugivores: des chauves souris:
"Différentes études sont en cours afin d'une part d'isoler le virus dans ces tissus et d'autre part de confirmer les modalités de contamination décrites ci-dessus. Ces résultats apportent un éclairage nouveau sur la nature épisodique des épidémies chez les primates et les hommes. De plus, une meilleure connaissance de la répartition écologique de ces espèces de chauves-souris pourrait permettre de développer des stratégie préventives afin de protéger les primates du virus Ebola. Par ailleurs, les chauves-souris, particulièrement /Hypsignathus monstrosus/, sont fréquemment capturées puis consommées par les populations des régions épidémiques. Par conséquent, des programmes de sensibilisation et un apport de nourriture nécessaire aux besoins des villages isolés pendant la saison sèche devraient contribuer à empêcher une éventuelle transmission du virus Ebola de la chauve-souris à l'Homme.""
Si le danger de contamination peut provenir de la contamination par des fientes de chauves souris porteuses et exprimant le pathogène, il peut être intéressant d'établir la carte des dangers potentiels. Cette carte, dans un premier temps pourrait se faire à partir des cartes de répartition des animaux évoqués.
Les chauve souris sont parfois des engrais par le biais de leurs fientes et ou cadavres, des animaux de compagnie, mais aussi des aliments.
