The report serves as the EC's annual submission to the UN/ECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP).

Contaminated fish are considered a good indicator that an organic chemical pollutant is accumulating in wildlife as it moves up the food chain. In fact, policy makers around the world use this measure to identify chemicals for regulation. But according to a new study published July 13 in Science (2007, 317, 236–239), this approach identifies only a subgroup of chemical culprits and excludes many chemicals that magnify in food chains after mammals or birds breathe them in.

EUROPE 26/08/10  European Commission adds dangerous chemicals to POP Regulation

On 26 August the European Commission amended the EU Regulation on persistent organic pollutants (POP) to add dangerous chemicals to the list of chemicals that are prohibited or heavily restricted. The amendment is in line with last year's international agreement reached at the 4th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Stockholm Convention. The substances that are added to the POP Regulation were already heavily restricted in the European Union because of the risks they pose to human health and the environment. POPs can lead to cancer, birth defects and immune and reproductive system dysfunction. Once released into the environment they remain there for decades and make their way up the food chain, accumulating in the fatty tissue of animals and humans. The chemicals which will join an existing list of banned POPs are: 4 types of polybromodiphenyl ether, alpha hexachlorocyclohexane, beta hexachlorocyclohexane, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride and pentachlorobenzene. The original POPs were mainly pesticides but certain substances of the new additions are used in consumer products, such as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) which is used for example in metal plating and fire fighting foams but also in stain repellents. The agreement, reached during the 4th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Stockholm Convention meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, was the result of four years of efforts by the European Union to eradicate the chemicals worldwide and to remove a serious health threat to millions of people. The EU had nominated the majority of the chemicals and has now amended its own legislation to implement the international decision. The European Union is committed to protect human health and the environment from dangerous chemicals and will continue promoting international discussions in order to ban further persistent organic pollutants.
