Journal of Virology 01-05 50th Western Poultry Disease Conference – Chickens succumbing to virus formerly avoided by vaccination

A virus common to poultry is outfoxing a long-used vaccine, apparently through natural genetic engineering and by using strategies to survive environmental insults, says a University of Illinois researcher who has been tracking new outbreaks around the world. A new form of fowlpox, he said, now threatens poultry production and requires a new vaccine strategy.

The record for the poultry industry regarding food safety has been good.
However, the public demands the impossible task of zero tolerance.
Where does the industry go from here?

Broiler Industry November 1998 Zero Tolerance Begins At The Farm - The task of meeting "zero tolerance" regulations for fecal material in chilling tanks in the processing plant begins on the farm.

POULTRY DIGEST 24/03/04 HATCHING EGG MANAGEMENT
In recent months it has been noticed that many hatcheries have experienced more contamination, including Salmonella, than usual. In order to better understand how to reduce contamination it is a good idea to review the biology of the egg. Table 1 demonstrates how the condition of the egg (clean, slightly dirty, or dirty) affects the number of bacterial populations on the shell surface and the resulting chick mortality after chicks have been placed from these eggs (Muller, 1979).

Bertrand CARLIER Date : Thu, 13 Jan 2005 14:56:09 +0100

Nicolas Rogard Thu, 13 Jan 2005 15:54:40 +0100

Bertrand CARLIER Thu, 13 Jan 2005 16:09:58 +0100

http://www.fas.usda.gov/dlp/BSE/bse.html

http://www.das.psu.edu/dairy/documents/midatlantic.pdf

· 66% of operations performed no testing for BVD, Brucellosis, Johne's Disease or TB prior to bringing dairy cattle onto the milking farm.
