Dutch authorities have completed the slaughter of 260,000 cattle, sheep and pigs to help control the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD).
Authorities had reported 26 confirmed cases of FMD in the Netherlands.

Dutch authorities sealed off infected rural areas and banned the transport of live animals and some food products. However, the government's efforts to contain the disease were hampered angry farmers and environmental groups who protested the slaughter of healthy animals and called for vaccinations instead.

While Dutch and German lobbyists have urged the European Union to review its policy against vaccinations, EU commissioner David Byrne has said repeatedly that destroying susceptible animals is the best way to combat FMD.

PAYS BAS - FIEVRE APHTEUSE
Le coût de l'épizootie de fièvre aphteuse est estimé à 3 milliards de florins par le Centraal Planbureau. Le CPB distingue trois secteurs atteints par la crise. L'agriculture de base aurait subi un préjudice de 1,2 milliard de florins, les entreprises évacuées ayant été les plus touchées. Les entreprises de traitement et les fournisseurs, comme l'industrie laitière et les fabricants de fourrage, ont perdu plus d'un milliard, selon les estimations du CPB. Le secteur du tourisme et des loisirs doit escompter des pertes de l'ordre d'un demi-milliard de florins. Au total, la crise de la fièvre aphteuse entraîne une baisse du produit intérieur brut annuel de 0,3 %, selon le CPB (Trouw p.7, Algemeen Dagblad p.7, De Telegraaf p.7).

Plusieurs journaux signalent la décision des directeurs des sept marchés aux bestiaux néerlandais de ne pas rouvrir leurs portes aujourd'hui, en dépit de l'autorisation accordée par le ministre Brinkhorst (Agriculture), après la crise de la fièvre aphteuse. Ils affirment ne pas pouvoir respecter les très sévères exigences imposées depuis peu par le ministre pour réduire le risque de contamination (NRC Handelsblad p.3, Het Financieele Dagblad p.5, De Telegraaf p.7).
